The Credit Card Perks You're Already Paying For (and Never Use)

The rewards points are the part everyone pays attention to. The genuinely valuable part — the insurance, the warranties, the statement credits — sits unread in a PDF almost no cardholder has opened. None of it pays out automatically. Every one of these benefits requires you to know it exists and to file for it. Here's what's likely hiding in your card, and a twenty-minute audit to claim it.

Free subscriptions and statement credits

Card issuers increasingly bundle in subscriptions and spending credits, and they expire unused if you don't claim them. A current example: Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve cardholders can claim a full year of Apple TV+ — a $159 value — just for holding the card.

The broader category is worth checking: travel credits, food-delivery memberships, rideshare credits, and airline fee credits are all common on mid- and premium-tier cards. The catch is that many are use-it-or-lose-it on a monthly or annual cycle — an unused monthly credit doesn't roll over, it simply evaporates. That's why the calendar reminder at the end of this article matters more than it sounds.

The offers you have to activate first

Chase Offers, Amex Offers, and Bank of America's Deals are targeted discounts sitting inside your banking app — spend $X at a specific merchant, get a statement credit back. They're real money, but they are opt-in: if you don't click "add to card" before you shop, you get nothing, even if you'd have qualified.

Make it a habit to scan the offers tab before any significant purchase, and add every offer you might plausibly use. Adding one costs nothing.

Purchase protections most people never claim

This is where the real money hides, and it's the least known part of any card.

  • Extended warranty. Many cards add at least a year to the manufacturer's US warranty on things you buy with the card, often up to $10,000 per item. If an appliance or a laptop dies just after its warranty lapses, this is a refund you can claim. Typical exclusions: motorized vehicles, software, used items, medical equipment.
  • Purchase protection. Covers new purchases against damage or theft for a window after you buy (commonly 90–120 days). Phone stolen a month after you bought it? Worth a claim.
  • Return protection. A shrinking benefit, but some cards will refund an item the store refused to take back within a set window.

One important reality check: issuers have been cutting these. Citi removed extended warranty from nearly all its cards and Wells Fargo dropped it entirely — so don't assume, verify on your specific card.

Cell phone insurance — the one people miss most

If you pay your monthly phone bill with the card, many cards cover your phone against theft and damage, typically up to around $500–800 per claim with a modest deductible. It usually costs nothing extra and often beats the carrier's own protection plan.

The requirement is the part people trip on: the coverage only applies if the bill is charged to that card. If you switched your phone bill to autopay on a debit card years ago, you're paying for coverage you can't use. Pair this with a cheap plan and it gets better — here's how to cut your phone bill with an MVNO.

Travel coverage that replaces what you'd otherwise buy

  • Rental car coverage (auto rental collision damage waiver). Two conditions: pay for the entire rental with the card, and decline the rental company's own waiver at the counter. Then damage or theft of the vehicle is covered. Know which kind you have: secondary coverage (the common type) pays after your own auto insurance and typically covers your deductible; primary coverage pays first, so you never involve your personal insurer. Primary is a genuinely valuable perk.
  • Trip delay and cancellation. If a delay exceeds a set number of hours, cards frequently reimburse meals and a hotel. Cancellation coverage can reimburse non-refundable bookings for covered reasons. Requirement: you generally must have paid for the trip with that card.
  • Baggage delay. Reimburses essentials when your bag doesn't arrive on time.

How to actually file a claim

Benefits are administered by a third party, not your bank's normal customer service, and the process is more routine than it sounds:

  1. Find your "Guide to Benefits." Search that exact phrase plus your card name, or pull it from your card's account page. This PDF is the contract — it lists every benefit, every limit, and every exclusion.
  2. Call the benefits administrator (the number is in that PDF) or file online. This is a different number from the one on the back of your card.
  3. Mind the deadline. Claims windows are strict and often short — sometimes as little as 90 days from the incident. Late is denied.
  4. Gather documentation. Typically the receipt, the card statement showing the charge, and evidence of the problem (repair estimate, police report, rental agreement).

The twenty-minute audit

Do this once and it pays for years:

  • Download the Guide to Benefits for each card in your wallet.
  • Write down every statement credit and free subscription, and set calendar reminders for the ones that reset monthly or annually.
  • Move your phone bill onto the card that includes cell phone protection.
  • Note which card has the best rental car and trip delay coverage, and book travel on it by default.
  • Before big purchases, buy on the card with extended warranty — then save the receipt somewhere you'll find it in three years.

Two honest caveats. First, these benefits are shrinking industry-wide, so treat any list (including this one) as a prompt to check your own documents rather than a guarantee. Second, perks are a reason to use a card you already have, not a reason to carry an annual fee you can't justify — and none of it is worth anything if you're paying interest, which will always dwarf the benefits.
