A phone bill is one of the few recurring expenses where you can cut the cost by half or more in an afternoon and barely notice a difference in daily use. What an MVNO actually is

An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) is a carrier that leases wholesale access to one of the big three networks — T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T — and sells it under its own brand. When you're on Tello or Mint, your phone connects to the exact same T-Mobile towers as a T-Mobile customer standing next to you.

What you're not paying for is everything wrapped around the network: retail stores, national ad campaigns, device subsidies, and 24/7 phone support. First, find out what you actually use

Most people are paying for unlimited data and using nowhere near it. Before you shop, check your real number:

The real trade-off: deprioritization

This is the one thing worth understanding before you switch, and it's rarely explained honestly. When a tower gets congested — a stadium, a downtown commute, a festival — the host carrier's own postpaid customers get served first. MVNO traffic is deprioritized, meaning it waits. In everyday use in normal places you won't notice. In a packed arena, you might.

That's the actual product difference you're paying $50/month less for. For most people it's an easy trade. If you regularly work from crowded venues or rely on your phone for something time-critical in dense crowds, it's a real consideration.

The other fine print

• Hotspot is capped. Unlimited plans usually include a specific hotspot bucket (often 10–20 GB), not unlimited tethering. If you tether a laptop for work, check this number specifically.
• Intro pricing renews higher. The headline price on a prepaid carrier is frequently a first-term rate. When that term ends, it renews at the standard price. Know the renewal number before you commit — it's the price you'll actually live with.
• Taxes may not be included. Some carriers quote plans plus tax and fees; a $25 plan can land closer to $29 out the door. A few include taxes in the advertised price. Compare the out-the-door number, not the sticker.
• Support is online-first. Chat and email, not a store you can walk into. If you want someone to hand your phone to, this isn't that.

How to switch without losing your number
