Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7 this year, and the sales around it are unusually split. For a few categories it's one of the two best moments of the entire year. For others it's a banner over prices that will be lower in eleven weeks. Knowing which is which is the whole article.

Why the split exists

Labor Day sits at a seasonal hinge. Retailers are clearing out summer inventory to make room for fall and holiday stock, and appliance and mattress makers refresh their model lines around now. That's what creates genuine discounts — the store actively wants the old stock gone.

Nothing similar is happening to televisions and laptops. Their real clearance event is Black Friday and Cyber Monday, eleven weeks later. A Labor Day "doorbuster" on a TV is a marketing window, not a price floor.

What's genuinely cheap

What to skip

TVs, laptops, phones, headphones. Labor Day promotions on these are real promotions but not real lows — the floor arrives at Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Buying a laptop now usually means watching it get cheaper in November.

There's an extra reason to wait on phones specifically: new flagship models launch in September, which is exactly what pushes last year's model down. Waiting a few weeks often beats the Labor Day price without any sale at all.

When to shop

The event is no longer a single weekend. Expect promotions to start roughly the last week of August and run through September 7, with Amazon's Labor Day event overlapping its back-to-school push, and Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Target, Walmart, and the mattress and furniture chains all running parallel sales.

That means two practical things:

1. Don't wait for the Monday. The best inventory in the clearance categories — especially patio and grills — is picked over well before the holiday itself. Early-week shopping beats holiday-Monday shopping.
2. But don't panic-buy day one either. Prices in these categories generally hold or improve across the window, so there's no advantage to being first on a big-ticket appliance.

A sale price is the first layer, not the only one. Before you check out:
