The Best Free Stuff You Can Grab Right Now (August 2026)
August is a good month for free things: back-to-school promotions are running, brands are pushing samples ahead of fall, and a few retailers are holding in-store giveaway events. Here's a hand-picked list of what's actually live, grouped by how each one works — because "free" comes in several varieties, and a couple of them ask you to front money first.
Three kinds of "free" to know first
- True freebies — no purchase, no payment. You request a sample, claim an in-store item, or fill out a short form.
- Free after rebate or cashback — you pay up front, then a portal or store rewards program returns the full amount. Genuinely free in the end, but you float the money and wait, and it only makes sense if you'd use the item anyway.
- Free trials — free only if you cancel in time. Real value, but they need a calendar reminder.
Everything below is labeled so you know which you're getting.
True freebies — no purchase needed
Free mini cooler cup at Lowe's — August 22, in store. Lowe's runs periodic in-store giveaway events, and this one is a free mini cooler cup on a single Saturday. These are first-come, while-supplies-last, so going early in the day matters far more than anything else.

Free Kevin's Natural Foods breakfast box — 275 winners. Worth flagging honestly: this one is a giveaway with a limited number of winners, not a guaranteed sample. Entry costs nothing, but treat it as a lottery ticket rather than a sure thing.

Free T-shirt from T-Shirts on a Mission. You nominate someone who could use a lift, and the shirt goes out. A nice one to actually do rather than just claim.
Free if you're a student
12 months of Google Gemini AI Plus, free via Handshake. A full year of a paid AI subscription at no cost for verified students. If you're eligible, this is one of the highest-dollar-value freebies on the list — just note the renewal date so it doesn't quietly start charging in a year.
Free after rewards or cashback
Batteries that pay for themselves at Office Depot/OfficeMax. A 100%-back-in-rewards offer means you pay at the register and receive the full amount back as store rewards. Free if you'll spend the rewards there — otherwise it's a store credit, not cash. Batteries are a sensible thing to stock up on when the net cost is zero.
$25 to spend at Sephora via TopCashback, for new members. The portal credits your account with the value after your purchase tracks, effectively covering a small order. Standard new-member terms apply, and the payout takes time to post — see our cashback portal guide for how tracking actually works.

How to claim freebies without regretting it
- Use a dedicated email address. Sample requests generate mailing lists. One free-stuff inbox keeps your real one clean.
- Set a reminder for anything with a renewal. Free trials and free-year subscriptions convert to paid automatically. The reminder should land a few days before the renewal, not on it.
- One per household is usually real. Most sample programs enforce it, and trying to get around it typically just voids the request.
- Never pay a "shipping fee" for a mystery prize. Legitimate samples from real brands don't ask for card details to release a free item.
- For in-store events, go early. Supplies are genuinely limited, and popular giveaways can be gone within the first hour.
